Hüseyin’s Success Story
‘A large corporation with established structures or a young start-up with plenty of room for maneuver and a business division that until then had only been familiar to me as a consumer?’ A dilemma that Hüseyin, an Information Science & Engineering student at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences at the time, faced in 2017.
His choice? Hüseyin has been with us for almost 3 years now, starting as a working student in the Marketing team. He has experienced first-hand how a start-up with 6 employees has grown into a medium-sized company and a leading solution for the European subscription businesses and he has himself grown along the way.
In his last year at University, inspired by billwerk and the subscription-based business model, Hüseyin decided to write his Master thesis at billwerk with the title: Analysis and comparison of corporate key figures in the Subscription Business area. We are extremely proud of the outcome of this teamwork as Hüseyin scored the highest-grade mark and we are now excited to see his career development as billwerk’s new Digital Marketing Manager!

How did billwerk help you to realize your personal goals?
‘One of my personal goals was to achieve a very good master’s degree. After I started as a working student at billwerk at that time, my university performance improved significantly. Better time management, efficient work and the courage to tread new and previously unfamiliar waters are just a few of the points I can list. It has changed my view of work and has shown me that work can certainly be fun, and that learning is not only there to achieve good grades, but that it develops you as a person, as an individual and broadens your horizon. That is worth gold.’
How did billwerk help you to realize your professional goals?
‘At billwerk I already had the opportunity as a student trainee to work across departments and thus to find out which areas I like best and to deepen my knowledge in these areas. This is not always a matter of course. My tasks and projects at billwerk gave me the opportunity to find solutions independently and to explore new areas that were previously unknown to me. From time to time this was of course super strenuous, but these efforts have paid off.’
What was the reason you chose to write your thesis at billwerk?
‘Towards the end of my master’s degree, I had already been with billwerk for over 2 years and was a permanent member of the team. Contrary to my bachelor thesis, this time I wanted to work in a company and ideally at billwerk. We had always been in very close contact with my direct supervisor, Pierre Schramm and we talked about my further employment at billwerk and about the possibility of writing my master’s thesis at billwerk as well. As agreed, Pierre suggested topics that not only matched one of my topics very well but were also highly innovative and had a real case application. For both sides, it was a 100% fit. Due to the longer cooperation at billwerk, I was aware that I would have full support and that in the end there would be added value for all parties involved – that was also the case in the end. I have always been able to enjoy objective criticism, a solution-oriented approach and constant emotional support at billwerk, and this support encourages you to perform at your best. It was the perfect balance between independent work with scope for development and security when it mattered. In my opinion, the perfect mixture for personal and professional development.’
You received the highest mark for your thesis! How did billwerk help you along the way?
‘From the first idea to the delivery, we discussed the current status in weekly intervals and whenever it was needed. Based on this, the direction was readjusted, stumbling blocks were removed and mental and emotional support was provided. In short: from the idea to the delivery, billwerk was literally there to help with action and advice. Many thanks again for that!’
What were the benefits of writing your thesis at billwerk?
‘I always had a contact person who gave me relevant advice and support. Unclear points were promptly clarified and I was supported in my research. It is always said that one is severely restricted and under a lot of pressure when writing the thesis in the company – this was not quite true for me. I wrote my bachelor thesis theoretically and without a company and felt that the master thesis, which I wrote in the company, was much more relaxed, much more exciting because it was a new field and in the end, there was a top mark which was rewarded for the degree of innovation.’
What have you learned during the process of writing your thesis at billwerk?
‘Well, this may sound a little strange, but I have learned during this time that a very large and stressful task can be fun and can bring joy. Independent of this: methodical as well as industry and specialist knowledge have been acquired during this time.’
With your thesis, you provided further scientifically sound work to the research in the area of Subscription Business in the D/A/CH region that billwerk was conducting. How do you feel about that?
‘I am proud to have created such work from the conception to the final product. Besides great relief about the results, I feel much more confident in dealing with industry codes and methods of scientific analysis. There are few things that fill a person with joy and one of them is to see how great work is rewarded and used. You are not only proud of your work, but also feel the highest degree of emotion when you see how profitable the work is for the team.’
Any piece of advice for current students who will write a thesis?
‘I can only say that when choosing the right company, there is no need to fear complicated research questions. Companies like billwerk are an example of what such a project should look like and how the topic and the student should be dealt with.’
After the end of your studies, you choose to continue at billwerk in the offered role of Digital Marketing Manager. What keeps you motivated to keep on rocking with billwerk?
‘I have been with billwerk for almost 3 years now and have always felt very comfortable in this company. Since I started here, I have been able to acquire a lot of methodological and technical knowledge, project management and communication skills. It is amazing how much added value a working student position can offer in a company like billwerk. It was the good mixture of support and scope for development that made me decide to stay with billwerk, the ideas for marketing activities and optimization measures are far from over. And not to forget about my colleagues – because they are amazing!!!’
